Five Trails Your Kids Will Actually Enjoy (Without the Whining)
Finding a hiking trail that works for the whole family in Albuquerque isn’t hard—we’re surrounded by options. Finding one where your kids won’t complain after five minutes? That’s the real challenge. These five trails deliver scenery, adventure, and manageable distances for families.
Petroglyph National Monument – Rinconada Canyon Trail – This 2.2-mile roundtrip loop is where history meets hiking. Kids love spotting hundreds of ancient petroglyphs carved into volcanic rocks by Native Americans and Spanish settlers 400-700 years ago. The trail is moderately strenuous with some elevation, but the rock art keeps young hikers engaged. Bonus: It’s educational without feeling like school. Free entry, open year-round, and easily accessible from Unser Boulevard NW.
Paseo del Bosque Trail – Want easy? This 16-mile paved trail along the Rio Grande is as family-friendly as it gets. Completely flat, shaded by massive cottonwood trees, and perfect for bikes, strollers, or leisurely walks. You’ll spot birds, maybe some rabbits, and enjoy peaceful river views. Access it from multiple points throughout the city. In January, the bare trees create stunning silhouettes against New Mexico’s blue skies.
Elena Gallegos Picnic Area Trails – Multiple loop options from 1-3 miles make this perfect for families with varying energy levels. Well-maintained, easy terrain, and spectacular Sandia Mountain views reward minimal effort. After your hike, use the picnic facilities to refuel. There’s a small parking fee ($1 weekdays, $2 weekends), but it’s worth every penny. Located off Tramway Boulevard, this is a local favorite for good reason.
Volcanoes Trail – Petroglyph National Monument – A 3.2-mile loop that lets kids hike around actual volcanic cones. The sweeping vistas of Albuquerque, the Rio Grande Valley, and Sandia Mountains make this feel like a real adventure. Multiple trail junctions mean you can customize distance based on your crew’s endurance. The terrain is sandy with lava rocks—wear closed-toe shoes and bring plenty of water.
Travertine Falls Trail – Just outside Albuquerque near Tijeras, this 1.2-mile out-and-back hike leads to seasonal waterfalls and a cave with fossils. Even in winter, kids love exploring the cave areas, and the trail is shaded by piñon, oak, and juniper trees. It’s an easy, short hike that feels like a bigger adventure than it actually is—perfect for younger children or first-time family hikers.
Trail Tips for January – Dress in layers. Mornings start cold but warm up fast. Bring more water than you think you need. Start early to avoid crowds and catch better light. And always pack snacks—hangry kids ruin even the best trails.
Albuquerque’s hiking scene makes it easy to raise outdoor-loving kids. Pick a trail, lace up, and make some memories.
